Lectures:
Prairie Quilts
- This is a slide lecture that shows the Illinois farmland, bits of remaining prairie & woodlands where I get the inspiration for my quilts.  I think that after this lecture you will see the landscape around you in a different light.  Slides include a tour of the land that I draw my inspiration from and a progression of the prairie quilts I have been making for over 25 years.
Group will need to provide a carousel projector

Cathy's Silk Road - This slide lecture traces the journey I made out East to do research for my book on silk ribbon.  Along the way I visited historic sites, libraries and museums to search out information and see original pieces worked with silk ribbon.  It features quilts and other items embellished with silk ribbon work and includes my own candid tips for doing research.  Group will need to provide a carousel projector.

An 18th Century Lady's Discourse on Plain Sewing & Fashion -  This lecture is a trunk show which grew out of my many years doing historic festivals.  I dress in the style of an 18th century shopkeeper (about 1780) and discuss the styles and clothing of the time.  This will include a brief history of my travels from Scotland to France to the New World.

The second part of this lecture highlights my collection of antique sewing tools, antique fabric and the styles of quilting and other needlework done at the time.  It includes quilts I have done in 18th century style and other examples of needlework from that period.  I have some 18th century recipes available for the group to prepare & serve if desired, please request them at the time you book this lecture.

Work in a Series - This is a slide lecture which explore work of quilters and other artists who have chosen to work in a series.  I give some of their reasons and the advantages they have found in doing series work.  This can help others decide if series work is right for them and give some ideas to help get one started.  I will also bring some examples of my own series work in Prairie Quilts to show. Group will need to provide a carousel projector.

Hawaiian Quilts - A slide lecture on the Hawaiian style of quiltmaking. Along with slides of tropical plants and the quilts they inspire I will talk about the technique of needle-turn applique which is a style I have long used in my own quilts.  Examples of needleturn pieces are included in this lecture.  Group will need to provide a carousel projector.

Additional silk ribbon classes -- I have been doing a nice Mother/daughter class with hearts -- each person will design a small silk ribbon heart as they learn the stitches to use.  This is a nice 3 hours class and can be expanded to a longer time frame is the group would like to do that.  This also works for the sunflower design -- rather than making a pin cushion it can be done as a small piece which can be framed and hung.  Call me for details.

Workshops:
Wildflowers & More - Learn my free-cut applique technique to make flowers, leaves, stems, animals, birds and trees.  I don't draw so I developed a style to cut fabric directly and layer the designs on my background.  Folk-art appeal includes tips on using gathered petals, layered flowers, pieced applique and folded stems.  No projects to finish!  Just a day spend creating a small sampler of techniques -- This is a 6 hour class which may be expanded to a 2-day or more class or combined with silk ribbon embellishment in a 2-day format.

Basic Silk Ribbon Embroidery - A hands on class to learn how to embroider with delicate silk ribbon and silk thread.  Students will create a small sampler piece completed in a day (6-hour class). We will practice traditional embrodery stitches which you can use to embellish quilts, clothing, crazy patchwork, etc.  Learn firsthand the appeal of this classic form of embroidery - 6-hour class is most effective to get comfortable with the process, 3-hour class is available.  Ribbon kit provided for $5. or bring your own supply.

Silk Ribbon Classes - For those with some embroidery experience - students will need to bring their own supply of ribbon for these classes:
o Combination & Little flowers - Learn combination stitches to make floral designs.  Ideas for making wall pieces using embroidered circles, ovals or horseshoe shapes will be shown.  Each student will create a personalized piece.
(3- or 6-hours)
o Sunflower pincusion or housewife - Simple 18th century sewing items, stitch a small pincusion or rolled up housewife (sewing kit) and learn the history behind their use.  Simple instructions using hand sewing & silk ribbon embroidery.  (6-hours or sunflower as small block can be done in 3-hours)
o Crazy Quilt Embroidery - Learn how to embellish crazy quilt patchwork.  Practice covering seams with feather, chain, buttonhole and herringbone stitches, Get ideas on where to place flowers, emblems, lettering and small designs. (3- or 6-hour class)
o Medieval Coiling Vine - This is a traditional design used since the Middle Ages, learn how to do this unmarked design and embellish it with silk ribbon flowers.  I can provide linen banding to work on for this class for an additional fee. (6-hours)
o Influences Quilt - A (non-threatening) design workshop to begin a personal quilt.  Students will bring photos, drawings, ideas & fabrics for a quilt they want to design.  Techniques, design methods and lots of inspiration will be presented to help everyone organize and begin their quilts. (6 hour or 2-day class - 2- day format ideal for larger guild or quilt shows)
o Hand Quilting - This class explores quilting design & technical improvement of hand quilting.  One focus will be to "learn to see" unmarked patterns using motifs on the fabric as a guide.  Methods to create interesting background fillers including stipple, clamshell, triple-row and meander quilting will be shown and practiced.  Starting without knots will be demonstrated and practiced. (3 hours)
